Vegetable patch

We have added an orchard to our model, in which we can enjoy nature and learn outdoors. It’s very beneficial for children. We have also added our rabbit called Bunny, who helps us to keep an eye on and care for the orchard.
Game zone

This space is essential, play is a fundamental activity for children. You will find a multitude of games, as well as a slide, swings, buckets and spades... and lots of nature. It is divided into different zones: free play, guided play and symbolic play.
The garden of books

This is a quiet space, dedicated to something very important and with a lot of value such as reading. It should be an area that conveys motivation to children and where they can enjoy the books.

As future teachers we wanted to add to our website a section explaining our vision, as experts, of space in education. How we think, as a team, about what should be the design of spaces in nursery schools, and for this we have focused on the playground.
To make it more realistic we made a 3D model. At first we were not very clear about the idea on which we wanted to base the model, so the whole team brainstormed ideas. In the end we opted for an outdoor space where children could feel free, so we decided to call the model Free Game. But we can't just think about playtime in terms of having it or not having it. It has to be good for the child's development and not intervene in it, that's why it has to be well organised.
We wanted to divide the model into three different areas, divided and organised pedagogically so that the children can make the most of the space and thus have more benefits.
As soon as we enter Free Game we find the play area, obviously this area is subdivided into three parts but they are linked together. As soon as we enter we find the guided play area, these are games that are drawn on the floor and are under a roof, we can see that in the model there is hopscotch and twister but the idea is that they can play many more. If we continue to move through the space we find the symbolic play area where there is a sandbox to play for example the kitchenettes and finally we find the free play area, here we find the slides and swings, as well as all the space that is free where the children can move and play freely. The play area is the largest of all as the children need space to run around and have fun, especially if they have just come out of the classroom and this area is surrounded by a few trees to provide them with shade while they play and so they can also be a little closer to nature.
As you enter the Free Game entrance, in the bottom right hand corner we have placed the garden area, we decided that this was the best area because of the light coming in and because it is away from the hustle and bustle of the children playing, it is a quieter area where you can work while enjoying nature. While there are children playing, other classes can go to this area without being disturbed. In addition, it was necessary that this area was well separated from the play area, because in the end they are totally different environments and areas.
Finally we find the Garden of Books area, located as its name suggests in the Free Game garden, we have worked hard in this area to make it a quiet and comfortable area to spend time reading, in the end it is an area that is prepared for it, as it invites to develop this activity. We found several huts that allow free reading and a tepee where we will find all the children's literature stored. We decided that all the books that should be in this tepee should be literary, as we were only looking for fun and entertainment for the children. We can't forget the cushions area, more prepared for group reading.
Now we want to develop more why we have chosen these areas in a more pedagogical way:
-The orchard → we have added an orchard to our model, because we believe that pedagogically it is very beneficial for students to have a natural space where you can work and play, interacting with your surroundings and enjoying the sun and the outdoors. This teaching tool allows to implement a large number of competencies and disciplines at the same time. It promotes students' responsibility for growing their own food, and also provides them with free and natural enthusiasm and learning. It allows you to test and experiment with the learning by doing technique that will make learning meaningful. It incorporates important values in the pupils such as respect, patience, commitment, companionship, conservation and care for nature, the environment and the surroundings, as well as promoting a healthy and balanced diet among our pupils, without the use of chemical products. It is also a good way for the infant children to help them to situate themselves in the season of the year in which we find ourselves, as the idea is to cultivate local products according to the season of the year in which we find ourselves.
In our garden we can also observe our rabbit/scarecrow Bunny, who helps us to watch over and look after the garden.

-The play area → It was clear to us that we could not leave out a play area in Free Game, but we knew that it had to be well organised so that its benefits would be favourable for the children's development. Within the play area we have divided the space into three zones:
→ Free play, in this area we can find the slides and swings, as we said before, in addition to all the free area that remains of the Free Game where the children can be without any kind of problem. We can provide them with materials such as vehicles (tricycles, trucks, cars...). The aim of this area is to allow children to develop social and emotional skills, as well as being able to resolve poor relationships with their peers, learn to share and be able to resolve conflicts. It is also an area that develops and encourages creativity, here it is the child himself who determines what to play, if he will play alone or with other people, the materials to be used, the time he will be having fun... Therefore, it also encourages autonomy and decision making. But what we liked most about this area is that it allows children to enjoy playing with what they have, to leave materialistic things to one side and to disconnect from technology.

→ Guided play, this area is located under the canopy of the playground, as soon as you enter Free Game. Here we can find different traditional games such as hopscotch and more modern games such as twister, although it is designed for more games such as skipping, jumping, snake, etc. Guided Play is fundamental in children's learning, it responds in a sensitive way to the actions and emotions that children present when playing. Its most important characteristic is that the children themselves are in charge and can choose what they do at any time. Free play and guided play share this characteristic. However, guided play also includes an important role for the teachers in charge of the activity, as they must allow the children to maintain control, but also provide subtle guidance to allow them to explore the right aspects of their environment to achieve the learning objective. In this area we mix guided games and traditional games as the latter allow the child to discover the value of collaboration and friendship. They pose challenges and encourage the child to make an effort to overcome difficulties, and enhance some useful skills and abilities in different areas.

→ Symbolic play, this is a multi-function area, and you can combine different activities by trimesters, for example for the first quarter, to the house, in the second quarter, to the kitchenettes and in the third quarter to the tents. It is an area where sand and water work together, the activities are raised in the manipulation of these two natural elements, exploring their properties with a wide range of material for it, we must provide various materials to children: buckets, play shovels, plastic tables, molds, glasses...

-The garden of books → This space will be outside, above the vegetable garden in the right corner as we enter Free Game. It is a quiet area where children can enjoy the outdoors on good weather days, sitting on the lawn or in the cushioned area for group reading or if they prefer, in the wooden huts, having a moment for themselves. We want it to be a space where words, images and books are always present. This space should allow a moment of calm, of listening, of thinking, being a quiet environment, while reading or having a book read to you. In this space there will also be a teepee where there will be some books that the children like, that have themes of their interests, we have decided that they will all be literary. We want it to be a different and original place that will attract the attention of the little ones and that they will enjoy it.
This reading corner, "The Garden of Books" has a clear, orderly and intentional structure, with simple visual codes that can be shared by all children. In this way the children's autonomy is enhanced when picking up and putting down books. The planning of this corner has been done with a reflective attitude and with an open mind to constant changes, being able to make changes adjusted to the reality of each moment. We will achieve a magical and special place for the children.
